In 2020, during the peak of the pandemic, Nala became the companion a military single mom’s family needed at home.

Nala was a therapy dog for a friend’s daughter with autism. Her daughter was unresponsive to Nala, so she became the family pet along with two other large dogs.
Eventually my friend had to move and couldn’t take Nala along, so she asked me if I was interested in taking Nala into our home — to which I said yes.
This was in 2020, the peak of the pandemic. I am a single mom in the Navy (I retire at the end of this month 🤩), but we had to work business as usual, so the timing couldn’t be better for my two sons to have a companion at home while I was at work and they were doing distance learning.
My kids and their nanny absolutely fell in love with her.
Nala was two years old and a bundle of joy. In the summer of 2021 I had to go on deployment, and at the last minute the boys’ grandma on their dad side said they could only take the boys but not Nala, as they had just adopted a puppy themselves.
So my parents offered to watch her while I was on deployment.
